Advice guide
How Much Does Physiotherapy Cost, and What Affects It?
Cost is a fair question and most clinics make it strangely hard to find. Our current fees for each appointment type are shown in the online booking system, so you can see the exact price before you commit to anything. What this page adds is the part that actually determines what you spend, which is rarely the headline session rate.
Total cost is session count multiplied by rate
People compare clinics on price per session, then end up spending more because they need twice as many appointments. A slightly higher rate with longer, one to one appointments and a plan you can carry out between visits often works out cheaper overall than a cheaper, shorter, more frequent model. Ask any clinic how many sessions they expect and what happens between them.
What changes the price of an appointment
Several legitimate factors move the cost, and knowing them helps you compare fairly.
- Assessment appointments are usually longer than follow ups
- Specific treatments such as shockwave therapy or hydrotherapy are priced separately
- Home visits cost more than clinic appointments, because of travel and time
- Longer appointment slots cost more but often reduce the total number needed
- Insurance funded care is billed to your insurer where the policy allows
Insurance and funded routes
If you have private health insurance, physiotherapy is commonly covered, though the authorisation route and the number of approved sessions differ by policy. Check your excess, your session limit and whether you need a GP referral before booking. If you are not insured and cost is a genuine barrier, NHS physiotherapy remains a valid route and we will say so rather than talk you into paying.
Ways to keep total cost down
None of these involve cutting corners on care, they are about spending on the parts that change the outcome.
- Do the home programme, since it is the part that reduces how many visits you need
- Be honest at review appointments about what you have and have not managed
- Space appointments out as you improve rather than stopping abruptly
- Ask for a plan at the assessment, including a realistic session range
- Check your insurance cover before the first appointment rather than after
What we will tell you at the assessment
At the end of your first appointment you should know what we think the problem is, what the plan looks like, roughly how many sessions that is likely to involve and what it will cost. If we do not think physiotherapy is the right answer for you, we will tell you that too, and you will not be booked in for a course of treatment you do not need.
Common questions
How much is a physiotherapy session?
Current fees for each appointment type are listed in our online booking system, so you can check the exact price before booking.
Is the first appointment more expensive?
Assessment appointments are usually longer than follow ups, and priced accordingly. The booking system shows both.
Will my insurance cover it?
Many policies cover chartered physiotherapy. Check your excess, session limit and whether a GP referral or authorisation code is required.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the problem, how long you have had it and what you need to get back to. We give you a realistic range at the assessment and review it as we go.
Do home visits cost more?
Yes, because of travel and appointment length. Current home visit pricing is shown in the booking system.
