Neck Pain and Headaches From Desk Work: What Is Going On

Neck pain that creeps up the back of the head, tight shoulders by mid afternoon and a headache that arrives on long screen days is one of the most common patterns we see, especially in people who work at a desk or drive for a living. It is usually mechanical, it usually responds well, and it is usually less about posture perfection than about how long you hold one position. This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If anything here matches your symptoms, an assessment is the sensible next step.

What is Neck Pain and Headaches?

Headaches that come from the neck are called cervicogenic headaches. Irritation of the upper neck joints and the muscles around them refers pain into the base of the skull, behind the eye or over the temple. They often sit alongside general neck ache and shoulder tightness, and can be confused with migraine or tension headache.

    Typical Symptoms

    • Ache at the base of the skull that builds through the day
    • Headache usually on one side, often starting in the neck
    • Stiffness turning your head, for example when reversing the car
    • Tightness across the tops of the shoulders and between the shoulder blades
    • Symptoms worse on heavy screen days and easier at weekends

    Common Causes & Triggers

    • Long static postures at a laptop, especially without a raised screen or separate keyboard
    • Driving for long periods, particularly with a seat set too far back
    • Upper neck joint stiffness with overworking surface muscles
    • Low shoulder blade and deep neck muscle endurance
    • Stress, poor sleep and jaw clenching, which all feed the same muscles

    Honest Recovery Timeline

Most desk related neck pain and cervicogenic headache eases noticeably within two to four weeks when the joint stiffness is treated and the daily pattern changes. Longstanding cases, especially with high stress or a demanding schedule, take longer and need the workplace side addressed as well.

Neck Pain and Headaches — Common Questions

Can neck problems really cause headaches?

Yes. The upper three neck segments share pain pathways with the head, so irritation there is felt as headache. Treating the neck often changes the headache pattern.

    Is my posture to blame?

Less than the internet suggests. Sustained position and low endurance matter more than the exact angle of your spine, which is why we focus on variation and capacity.

Will a new chair fix it?

Sometimes it helps, but equipment alone rarely resolves it. Screen height, break frequency and shoulder girdle endurance usually do more per pound spent.

    Could it be migraine instead?

It can be, and the two often coexist. If your headaches come with aura, nausea, light sensitivity or a clear trigger pattern, mention it so we can advise whether GP review is the better first step.

    How many sessions is typical?

Many people need a small number of sessions alongside a home plan. We reassess each visit and tell you honestly if we are not making progress.
