Using Your AXA Health (AXA PPP) Policy for Physiotherapy at Bluebell
AXA Health policies typically include musculoskeletal (MSK) cover, which usually pays for physiotherapy, sports massage where clinically indicated, shockwave therapy and rehab. Most AXA policies require you to authorise treatment before your first appointment — do this and you'll usually only pay any excess.
How the AXA Claims Process Usually Works

Call AXA Health on the number on your membership card (usually 0800 068 3020) and tell them you'd like to claim for physiotherapy.

AXA will ask about your symptoms and either authorise self-referral or ask for a GP referral first — most MSK complaints allow self-referral.

You'll receive an authorisation code and a session cap (typically 6–8 sessions initially).

AXA Physiotherapy — Common Questions
Do I need a GP referral for AXA physiotherapy?
Usually no — AXA Health allows self-referral for most musculoskeletal problems (back, neck, knee, shoulder, sports injuries). Call AXA before you book and they'll issue an authorisation code straight away.
How many sessions will AXA authorise?
AXA usually authorises an initial 6–8 sessions, then reviews. If you need further treatment we'll write a short progress note to support additional sessions — this is routine.
Will AXA cover shockwave therapy or specialist pain treatments?
AXA generally covers evidence-based physiotherapy including shockwave therapy for tendon conditions when clinically justified. Confirm with AXA before your visit and we'll include the treatment plan in our claim notes.
What if I have an excess on my policy?
We take the excess at your first appointment and invoice AXA for the rest. If your excess is £150 and a session is £65, you pay the first two sessions (up to £150) before AXA takes over.
