Using Your Bupa UK Policy for Physiotherapy at Bluebell

Bupa policies generally cover physiotherapy as part of Muscle, Bone and Joint (MBJ) cover. Most Bupa members can self-refer through Bupa's MBJ pathway, which triages your symptoms over the phone and issues a pre-authorisation for physiotherapy without needing a GP visit first.

How the Bupa Claims Process Usually Works

    1. 1

Call Bupa on 0345 609 0111 (or the number on your Bupa card) and ask about the Muscle, Bone and Joint (MBJ) service.

    2. 2

A Bupa physiotherapist assesses you over the phone and, in most MSK cases, authorises face-to-face physiotherapy.

    3. 3

      You'll get a pre-authorisation number and a session limit.

    4. 4

Book at Bluebell on 01634 757123 or online, share your pre-auth number and Bupa membership number.

    5. 5

We invoice Bupa directly. You pay any policy excess at your first visit.

Insurer networks and cover rules change over time. Always confirm your current cover directly with Bupa before your first appointment — or call us on 01634 757123 and we'll walk you through it.

    What is physiotherapy with Bupa?

Physiotherapy with Bupa usually means using your policy's Muscle, Bone and Joint cover to pay for assessment and treatment of a musculoskeletal problem, such as back, neck, knee or shoulder pain. Bupa triages your symptoms first and, where physiotherapy is appropriate, authorises sessions with a physiotherapist. Bluebell's physiotherapists are HCPC registered, and appointments run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, at Warren Road, Blue Bell Hill, Chatham ME5 9RD.

How to get physio on Bupa

Start with Bupa rather than the clinic. Call the number on your membership card, describe the problem and ask about physiotherapy through Muscle, Bone and Joint. Once you have an authorisation number and know how many sessions are covered, book with us and share that number. If you are searching for a Bupa covered physio near you, or a Bupa approved or preferred provider, ask Bupa which providers your plan can use, because networks differ between policies and change over time.

Does your Bupa plan cover physiotherapy?

Cover depends on the policy. Some plans, including some Bupa Select options, have different outpatient rules, limits or excesses, so check what yours includes before booking. Exercise physiology and other services may sit under different benefits. Our private physiotherapy service page explains what an appointment involves, and the guide to private versus NHS physio sets out how insured and NHS routes compare.

    Urgent problems and Bupa

Insurance triage is not an emergency service. For a suspected fracture, a limb that looks deformed, or back pain with numbness around the groin or new bladder or bowel problems, go to A&E. Physiotherapy authorisation can follow once urgent care has been given.

    Bupa Physiotherapy — Common Questions

Does Bupa cover physiotherapy without a GP referral?

Yes — Bupa's MBJ (Muscle, Bone and Joint) service is designed for exactly this. Call them, do the phone triage, and you'll usually be authorised straight to physiotherapy.

How many Bupa physiotherapy sessions are typically approved?

Bupa usually authorises 6 sessions initially and extends if we submit a progress note showing clear reason for more treatment.

Does Bupa pay for sports massage or shockwave therapy?

Bupa covers physiotherapy techniques used within a treatment plan — that can include soft-tissue work, exercise rehab and shockwave for tendon problems. Standalone sports massage without a physio diagnosis isn't usually covered.

    What about a policy excess?

If your Bupa policy has an excess, you pay it at your first appointment and we invoice Bupa for the rest.

    Are you a Bupa-recognised provider?

Recognition and network status change. Please confirm your current Bupa cover route by calling Bupa or 01634 757123 — we'll walk you through it in a minute.

    What is physiotherapy on Bupa?

It is physiotherapy paid through your Bupa policy, usually under Muscle, Bone and Joint cover, after Bupa has triaged your symptoms and authorised sessions.

How do I get physio on Bupa?

Call Bupa using the number on your card, complete their triage, get an authorisation number, then book and share that number with the clinic.

    Does Bupa Select cover physiotherapy?

It depends on your exact policy and options. Check outpatient cover, limits and any excess with Bupa before your first appointment.

Is exercise physiology the same as Bupa physiotherapy?

No. Exercise physiology is a different service and may sit under different benefits. Ask Bupa how your policy treats each one.
