What Is MSK Physiotherapy? A Plain Guide
MSK physiotherapy, short for musculoskeletal physiotherapy, is the assessment and treatment of problems in the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and the spine and nerves around them. It is the most common type of physiotherapy and covers everyday problems such as back pain, neck pain, sore knees and shoulders, sports injuries and recovery after surgery. Bluebell treats a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, with HCPC-registered physiotherapists at Blue Bell Hill. This is general information, not a diagnosis. An individual assessment is needed before deciding what suits you.
What you do between appointments
MSK physiotherapy relies heavily on what happens at home. Most plans include a small number of exercises, advice on pacing activities that aggravate the problem and guidance on sleep, work and exercise. You are encouraged to understand your condition rather than depend on the clinic. Progress is reviewed at each visit and exercises are changed as you improve. If symptoms change in a way that worries you, contact the clinic or your GP rather than waiting for the next appointment.
What MSK physio treats
The site lists a wide range of musculoskeletal and pain conditions, including:
- Back pain, neck pain and sciatica
- Shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
- Sports injuries and tendon problems
- Stiffness and arthritis-related pain
- Rehabilitation after surgery
- Headaches and jaw pain linked to the neck and muscles
What happens in an MSK assessment
An MSK physiotherapist starts with questions: how the problem started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects work and sleep, and your general health. They screen for anything that needs a doctor. The physical examination tests movement, strength, sensation and specific structures. At the end they explain their working diagnosis in plain language and agree a plan with you.
Typical treatments
Most MSK plans combine education, exercise and, where helpful, hands-on treatment. Exercise is tailored to what you can currently do and progressed as you improve. Other options at Bluebell include sports massage, acupuncture, electrotherapy, shockwave for some persistent tendon problems, and hydrotherapy in a warm pool for people who find land exercise difficult.
MSK physio, osteopathy and chiropractic
Physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors all treat musculoskeletal problems. They differ in training emphasis and in how much each relies on hands-on techniques versus exercise and rehabilitation. Our comparison page sets out the differences fairly if you are deciding who to see.
NHS MSK services and private MSK physio
Many NHS areas run MSK services that you can self-refer to or be referred into by your GP. Private MSK physiotherapy lets you book directly, choose your time and usually keep the same clinician. Some people use both. There is no quality difference implied by the setting; the practical differences are access and continuity.
Warning signs that need a doctor
Seek urgent medical help for back pain with numbness around the bottom or genitals, new difficulty passing urine, or loss of bladder or bowel control. See a doctor promptly for pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer with new pain, pain that is severe and constant at night, or after a significant fall or accident.
Common questions
Can MSK physio help long-standing pain?
Long-standing pain is something physiotherapists regularly assess. The aim is to understand what keeps it going and build a realistic plan with you; no outcome can be promised in advance.
What does MSK stand for?
Musculoskeletal: the muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and related tissues that let you move.
Is MSK physio the same as normal physio?
It is the most common branch of physiotherapy, so for most people it is what they think of as physio. Other branches include respiratory and neurological physiotherapy.
Do I need a referral for MSK physio?
Not for private appointments if you are paying yourself. Insurers may have their own referral rules.
Does Bluebell offer women's health physio too?
Yes. Women's health physiotherapy, including pelvic floor and pregnancy-related problems, is one of the clinic's services.
Where is the clinic?
Warren Road, Blue Bell Hill, Chatham ME5 9RD. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, with free parking.
