Post Surgery Rehabilitation with Physiotherapy
Post surgery rehabilitation at Bluebell is physiotherapy that helps you rebuild movement, strength and confidence after an operation, working within the precautions your surgical team has given you. Appointments are at our clinic on Warren Road, Blue Bell Hill, Chatham ME5 9RD, and home visits are available for people who cannot travel yet. Rehabilitation after knee and hip replacements, ACL reconstruction, shoulder repairs and spinal surgery is part of what we offer.

Your surgeon's plan comes first
Every operation comes with its own precautions, such as how much weight you can put through a leg, which movements to avoid and when a brace can come off. Bring your discharge letter, exercise sheets and any restrictions to your first appointment. Physiotherapy works alongside your consultant's protocol rather than replacing it. If something in your recovery does not feel right, such as increasing wound redness or a sudden change in pain, your physiotherapist will advise you to contact the surgical team before going further with rehab.
After knee or hip replacement
Most people are given exercises by the hospital team before they go home, and the questions often begin once they are back in their own surroundings. When should physio start after a knee replacement? What kind of physical therapy helps after a hip replacement? The honest answer depends on your operation and what your surgeon advises. Outpatient physiotherapy can help with walking, stairs, getting in and out of the car and building strength, at a pace your new joint tolerates. Our knee replacement rehab and hip replacement rehab pages explain those recoveries in more detail.
Ligament, shoulder and spinal surgery
Rehabilitation after an ACL reconstruction usually runs over many months, with stages for movement, strength, running and returning to sport. Shoulder repairs often start with a period of protection before active strengthening. After spinal surgery, the focus is commonly on walking, sitting tolerance and returning to daily tasks safely. In each case the plan follows the stage you are at, and your physiotherapist explains what each exercise is for. Our ACL reconstruction rehab page covers that recovery, and the physiotherapy after surgery guide describes what the first weeks often involve.
Hydrotherapy and home visits
For some people, exercise in warm water is a useful step when moving on land is still difficult. Our hydrotherapy service offers one-to-one sessions in a pool heated to around 34°C, once your wound has fully healed and your surgeon agrees. If travelling to the clinic is not realistic in the early weeks, our home visits service brings physiotherapy to you, subject to suitability and coverage. You can move from home visits to clinic appointments when you feel ready.
Before your operation
Some people find it helpful to start physiotherapy before surgery, to build strength, practise exercises and plan the first days at home. Our guide to preparing for joint replacement surgery explains what that can involve. Ask your surgical team whether there is anything you should avoid in the meantime.
Warning signs and booking
Contact your surgical team or GP promptly for a wound that becomes red, hot, swollen or starts leaking, a fever, or pain that is getting steadily worse. Call 999 for chest pain or sudden breathlessness, and seek urgent help for a painful, swollen calf, which can be a sign of a clot. You can book with us directly without a GP referral. Appointments run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, with free parking. If you are claiming on insurance, check authorisation with your insurer first and ask the clinic for current fees.
Common questions
Do I need physio after a knee replacement?
Most people are given exercises after a knee replacement, and many find guided physiotherapy helpful for walking, stairs and strength. Your surgeon's advice decides what is right for you.
When should physio start after a knee replacement?
The hospital team usually starts exercises very soon after surgery. Outpatient physiotherapy timing depends on your operation and your surgeon's protocol, so bring your discharge advice.
Will back pain go away after a hip replacement?
A hip replacement treats the hip joint. Back pain can have separate causes, so if it continues after your operation, ask for it to be assessed rather than assuming it will settle.
Do I have to go to a rehab centre after a hip replacement?
Not necessarily. Many people recover at home with exercises and outpatient or home visit physiotherapy. Bluebell is a physiotherapy clinic, not a residential rehabilitation centre.
