Physio-Led Hydrotherapy Sessions: Assessment to Progression

Bluebell provides one-to-one hydrotherapy in a purpose-built pool heated to around 34°C. This service page explains how we decide whether water is an appropriate setting, what a physio-led session involves and how pool work may connect with land rehabilitation. The main hydrotherapy page gives the full booking overview and practical details.

Physio-Led Hydrotherapy Sessions: Assessment to Progression

Who may be considered for the pool

Bluebell's stated hydrotherapy service includes post-surgery rehabilitation, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, neurological rehabilitation, balance work, fibromyalgia flares and sports recovery where land loading is painful. That list does not mean the pool is suitable for every person with one of those labels. Wound healing, current health, confidence in water and the next functional goal all form part of the decision.

What happens before and during a session

The first contact includes a history and movement assessment. The physiotherapist then selects a starting dose and movements linked to your goals. Sessions are one-to-one rather than a generic class, and non-swimmers are welcome in the chest-deep pool. You should tell the clinician about recent surgery, wounds, infection or any change in medical symptoms before entering the water.

How water and land physiotherapy connect

Hydrotherapy is physiotherapy delivered in water. Buoyancy and water resistance create a different loading environment, while land appointments connect progress to walking, stairs, lifting, work or sport. Some plans use one setting and some use both. The relationship should be clear and purposeful rather than two separate programmes.

    Common Questions

How is a physio-led hydrotherapy session different from a pool class?

Each session is one-to-one. Your physiotherapist chooses the exercises from your assessment, watches how you respond in the water and adjusts the plan, rather than you following a group routine.

Will I only have pool sessions?

Not necessarily. Some plans stay in the water, some move to land rehabilitation, and some use both. The choice depends on your goals and how you progress.

What decides whether I can start in the pool?

Your history, current health, any recent surgery or wounds, and your confidence in water. If the pool is not suitable yet, your physiotherapist will explain why and suggest a land-based start.

When should I check with my GP or surgeon first?

If you have a healing surgical wound, a current infection, or a heart or breathing condition that has changed recently, get their advice before hydrotherapy.
