Sports Physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy assesses pain and injuries in the context of the exercise you want to return to. At Bluebell, this means an assessment at our Blue Bell Hill clinic, followed by discussion of treatment, exercise and return-to-sport planning. You can book directly without a GP referral. You do not need to compete professionally: explain your usual activity, the problem and the movements you are finding difficult so the appointment starts with your needs.

    Physiotherapy exercise assessment at Bluebell

Book an injury assessment, not a promised recovery date

Our clinic is on Warren Road, Blue Bell Hill, Chatham ME5 9RD. Appointments are with HCPC-registered physiotherapists, with free on-site parking and opening hours Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm. When arranging a visit, tell us how the problem started and whether you have already seen a doctor or another clinician. Bring relevant hospital letters, exercise sheets or restrictions. These help the discussion, but you do not need to organise a scan yourself before asking for an assessment.

    Your activity shapes the assessment

A painful ankle means something different to a runner, a person returning to football and someone who simply wants to walk comfortably. Describe the surfaces, movements and training sessions that matter to you. Assessment looks at the painful area alongside strength, movement and control, and how those relate to the task. Our sports injuries information explains common problems without assuming that the location of pain tells us the diagnosis. Sudden trauma and gradual training-related discomfort may need different starting points.

    Treatment choices and practical rehabilitation

Depending on the findings, physiotherapy can include hands-on treatment, an exercise programme and advice about activity. There is no single treatment that suits every sporting injury. Ask what each part of the plan is intended to address, what you can practise and which symptoms should prompt a review. Exercises should relate to the demands you face rather than being a generic list. If you have had an operation, your surgical team’s precautions take priority and should be brought to the appointment.

    Planning the return to training

Returning to sport involves more than waiting until an area feels comfortable while resting. The discussion can consider movement, repeated effort and the tasks involved in your usual sessions. Your physiotherapist can help you identify stages and review how you respond, rather than promise a date for unrestricted activity. Tell them about work, caring responsibilities and the time you realistically have for exercises. A plan that fits your week is easier to discuss and adjust than one based only on a competition deadline.

Sports physio and massage have different roles

Sports massage focuses on soft tissue work and muscle tension. Sports physiotherapy has a broader assessment and rehabilitation role; massage may be considered within that plan, but is not a substitute for examining an injury. If you are unsure which appointment to choose, describe the symptoms when contacting us. Read what sports physiotherapy involves for background, or see our sports massage service for soft tissue appointments. The guide explains the subject; this page is the service starting point for booking an injury assessment.

    Common questions

What is a sports injury centre?

It is a description used for services assessing and treating exercise-related injuries. At Bluebell, sports injury care is physiotherapy at our existing clinic, not a separate emergency department.

Is a sports physiotherapist a sports injury doctor?

No. A physiotherapist and a medical doctor have different professional roles. If symptoms need medical investigation, urgent care or a doctor’s advice, physiotherapy does not replace that.

When should I seek urgent help after a sports injury?

Go to A&E for a visibly deformed limb, a cold or numb foot or hand after injury, or a suspected serious fracture. Seek urgent advice if you cannot bear weight or pain and swelling are severe. Head injury symptoms also need medical assessment.

Can I claim for a sports injury?

Insurance cover and legal compensation are separate matters. Ask your insurer about your policy and any authorisation before relying on cover. We cannot establish entitlement to compensation.

How much will sports physiotherapy cost?

Ask the clinic for current assessment and follow-up fees before booking. The plan and number of visits depend on the assessment, not a standard package promised here.
